Concluding an exciting month of May that included many former Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix winners competing in the biggest race of the year, all eyes turned to the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge over Memorial Day Weekend.
While no previous Nashville winners found their way on the podium, the race still delivered an historic day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. From Felix Rosenqvist capturing his first Indy 500 victory to a record-setting number of lead changes and the closest finish in race history, this year’s race was unforgettable from start to finish.
Here’s where former Nashville winners finished on Sunday:
Josef Newgarden – Finished 28th (Qualified 23rd)
On Lap 125 of 200, Newgarden, behind the wheel of his No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet, seemingly cut it too close in Turn 4, clipping the rumble strip before spinning into the SAFER barrier. The hard impact caused significant damage to the car and ended his day early. Newgarden later reported a minor foot injury and was seen icing it following the incident, but he was released from the infield care center later that afternoon. This unfortunate landslide brings Newgarden to the number eight slot in the championship standings.
Kyle Kirkwood – Finished 16th (Qualified 25th)
After making his penultimate pit stop on Lap 179, Kirkwood was shuffled back toward the back of the field. A few untimely caution periods in the final moments of the race limited his ability to work his way back through traffic, and after running inside the top 10 for much of the day, Kirkwood ultimately crossed the line in 16th. Kirkwood now ranks third in the championship standings.
Scott Dixon – Finished 15th (Qualified 10th)
A four-time Nashville winner, Dixon started the 2026 Indianapolis 500 from the inside of Row 4 after a 4-lap qualifying run of 230.347 mph. He traded the lead a record-setting 26 times during the race, but a late restart out of a red flag pushed Dixon back. Ultimately, the New Zealander finished 15th, bringing his championship standing to ninth place.
Marcus Ericsson – Finished 13th (Qualified 17th)
Ericsson finished 13th in the No. 28 Phoenix Investors Honda for Andretti Global after starting in Row 6. Ericsson steadily worked his way through the field and ran as high as fourth before finishing 13th. It did mark the first time in three races Ericsson ran through the finish after mechanical issues in the Sonsio Grand Prix and Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach.
The NTT INDYCAR SERIES next moves to the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix set for May 31. The race on the streets of Detroit marks the first of four races left before INDYCAR returns to Nashville Superspeedway for the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix on July 19.
